NEW YORK (AP) _ Voya Financial Inc. (VOYA) on Wednesday reported a third-quarter loss of $319 million,driftless area mn after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the New York-based company said it had a loss of $2.64. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and to account for discontinued operations, came to $1.19 per share.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.41 per share.

The retirement, investment and insurance company posted revenue of $2.07 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $128 million.

Voya shares have declined 17% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $50.48, a fall of 9% in the last 12 months.
